The third annual Sydney Architecture Festival will be held on Monday 5 October 2009.  Last year's event attracted over 6,000 participants.

The Festival provides thought provoking new perspectives on Sydney by developing the community's appreciation and enjoyment of good architecture and communicating the importance of good design in achieving a sustainable, healthy and culturally rich built environment. > more

Colour & Design Presentation - by Di Swinbourn

A presentation by Di Swinbourne, head of colour at Sydney Design School & Dulux Colour Design Awards 09 judge.

Di is a colour specialist and has been consulting and lecturing in this field for over a decade, focusing on residential and commercial projects and working with creative industries on aspects of colour.

Di has also been involved in colour education since 2000. She is currently Head of Colour at Sydney Design School.

Di was a judge at the 2009 Dulux Colour Awards. She is delighted to be presenting the winning Colour designs, all unique and clever examples of colour from some of Australia’s leading Colour Designers.

Di is also a member of Colourways Australia, The Colour Society of Australia, and the Organizing Committee of the AIC 11th International Colour Congress, Sydney 2009.

Contempo - Art of Architecture

Imagine cities as canvas and architects as artists!

The Australian Institute of Architects collaborates again with Contempo, the society for younger members of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, for this special annual event in its fifth year.

Two winners of Australia's most prestigious awards for architecture will present talks on the influence of art in their work and showcase recent projects via slideshow imagery.

Peter McGregor, Co Principal of McGregor Westlake Architecture will speak along with winner of the AIA NSW Chapter Award for Residential Architecture, Tony Chenchow of Chenchow Little.

Join us for food and drinks in the Yiribana Foyer for refreshments and mingling following the talks. All proceeds from this event will go to Contempo to fund future acquisitions of contemporary art for the AGNSW.

The Lloyd Rees Memorial Lecture

The 2009 Lloyd Rees Memorial Lecture Speaker is Brit Andresen, Professor of Architecture at Queensland University. Brit Andresen studied architecture at Trondheim University Norway qualifying as Sivil Arkitekt in 1969. She is a Registered Architect in Queensland, member of the RAIA and has taught architecture at the University of Cambridge, the Architectural Association and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning UCLA (Master of Architecture Program). Her private practice in Cambridge and, with Peter O’Gorman, in Brisbane has resulted in various built works, which have been published or exhibited. She was awarded the RAIA Gold Medal for Architecture in 2002 . Her current research and projects are the area of building design with landscape.

In her address she will indicate the significance of painters and poets to architectural outlooks and philosophies, and ways of perceiving landscape and the built environment. Prof Andresen will also reflect on the role of education and parallels between practising artists and architects who also teach. The address will also consider sustainability in architecture and current thinking.
