Festival Champions Appointed


Anthony Burke, Andrew Burns, Matt Chan,  Kim Crestani, Tamara Donnellan, David Holm, Liane Rossler, Kate St James, Hanna Tribe and Tone Wheeler.

Anthony-Burke Anthony Burke is an Associate Professor and Head of the School of Architecture at UTS as well as Director of the architectural design research practice Offshore Studio. A graduate of the Advanced Architecture Design Masters at Columbia University (2000) and the University of New South Wales (hons 1. 1996), Anthony is a designer, researcher and curator specialising in is¬sues of contemporary architectural design and theory related to technology and its implications for the built environment.

Anthony has been involved in the Sydney Architecture Festival through the UTS Open Agenda Exhibition and University of Technology Talks program – this is his first year as Festival Champion and we welcome him to the team.


 
Andrew Burns Andrew Burns Architect is a young and enthusiastic practice, established in 2008. Work undertaken to date includes numerous houses, alterations and additions, multi-unit projects, small commercial projects and a range of speculative design competitions.

In establishing his practice, Andrew Burns has built upon experience at Neeson Murcutt Architects, including roles as project architect on two Wilkinson Award winning projects; the Whale Beach and Five Dock houses.

Andrew Burns Architect seeks to undertake a high standard of work, integrating environmental concerns, social sustainability and a refined aesthetic sensitivity.  The practice enjoys the process of community engagement and seeks to integrate meaningful dialogue into all projects.

The practice’s work demonstrates an ability to respond to urban and landscape settings, undertaking all projects with an attention to detail and a clear conceptual basis.

Andrew Burns Architect is currently making a transition to larger projects and has commenced projects for a range of social housing and aged care providers.  The practice seeks to undertake work that responds to emerging social conditions, breathing life into the fields of aged care and affordable housing and finding memorable design possibilities within both.

 
Matt-Chan Matt Chan is the founding principal of SCALE Architecture, a Sydney based practice committed to excellence in Architecture, design and urbanism. SCALE is a multiple award winning practice, established in Amsterdam (2002) and Sydney (2004).

He is a graduate of Berlage Institute of Architecture in the Netherlands, where he conducted post professional research under the supervision of Elia Zenghelis (founding partner of OMA) and Ben van Berkel (UN studio).

Matt has since been teaching design studio in the Masters and undergraduate programs at the University of Sydney, the University of NSW and more recently at the University of Technology.

Matt was awarded the 2011 AIA NSW Emerging Architect prize, an AIA NSW Awards Small Project Commendation for the Australia St Infants School COLA in 2010, an Australian Timber Design Awards High commendation in 2004 and the Byera Hadley Travelling scholarship in 2001.

Matt's contribution to the public discourse includes exhibitions, talks and other media. He has exhibited his work in Sydney's Laneways By George! temporary art installation in 2009, in the 'Abundant Australia' exhibition for the 2008 Venice International Architecture Biennale, was invited to present and exhibit a future vision for Sydney at the Institute's 2008 National Conference, was part of the exhibition 'Art + Architecture 11: Home- Real and Ideal' (Boutwell Draper Gallery). He presented at SONA's Rehab Conference 2009, and regularly talks at the NSW Chapter's Tuesday Night Talks at Tusculum.

This is Matt's first year as a Festival Champion – we are delighted that he is part of the team.

 
Kim-Crestani Kim Crestani formed Order Architects in 1984. Kim manages the practice and focuses on client liaison, design, presentations and development opportunities.

Kim has given talks, seminars and workshops at both the RAIA and HIA, most recently at the 'Housing of the Future' Forum in Perth, May 2006. She has been published in House and Garden, Vogue Living, Belle, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Weekend Magazine, The Real Estate Journal, Architecture Australia, and the Architecture Bulletin. She was also interviewed for the highly acclaimed ABC television series 'In the Mind of the Architect' and has been a guest on Radio National's The Comfort Zone. Recently Kim has appeared on the ABC's The New Inventors program to present "The Pod System". As the inventor of this new home add-on scheme, Kim demonstrated and explained the invention on behalf of thepodsystem™.

In 2006, the RAIA awarded Kim the prestigious Marion Mahony Griffin Award For A Distinctive Body Of Architectural Work And To Recognise The Contribution Of Women Architects To Architecture In New South Wales. In Feb 2009 Kim was appointed to the NSW Nation Building + Jobs Plan Taskforce to assist in the stimulus package initiated by the Federal Government.
She is one of three architects who form the Design Review Panel for the New South Wales government's initiative to increase the capacity of the Sydney metropolitan rail network via the North West Rail Link.

This is Kim's second year as a Festival Champion

 
Tamara-Donnellan Tamara Donnellan is Associate Director of TERROIR which she joined in 2000 after completing her architectural education at the University of Adelaide. Tamara worked for the practice until her departure for international experience. In 2003 and 2004, Tamara worked as a Senior Architect in the Edinburgh office of major British practice, RMJM. She was the Project Architect on the design, documentation and contract administration of the School of Music, Performing Arts & Media for Newcastle College. Returning to TERROIR at the beginning of 2005, Tamara has been Project Architect of 86-88 George Street, Commonwealth Place Amenities, Leichhardt House, Burnie Makers Workshop along with working on the retail portfolio. Currently Tamara is working as the Project Architect on the refurbishment of the National Capital Exhibition in Canberra. Tamara is an active member of DARCH and member of the NSW Chapter's Practice Committee and was awarded the 2010 AIA NSW Chapter Emerging Architect Prize.

This is Tamara's second year as a Festival Champion and we are pleased that Tamara is working with us this year again.


 
David-Holm David Holm is the Director responsible for Transport and Infrastructure projects at Cox. With over 25 years experience, he has completed numerous projects in Australia and internationally.

David's design focus is in the provision of memorable and successful public built form. He is driven by the interaction of design philosophies and practical constraints. His key projects include Singapore's Changi Terminal 3 new terminal and Terminal 1 remodelling, Chek Lap Kok International Airport Hong Kong - East Hall Retail, New Delhi International Airport India, Sydney Airport International "Forum" development and the new North West Rail Link in Sydney.

David works with several education institutions, participating in tutoring, mentoring and presenting masterclass workshops. He is a recipient of the NSW Board of Architects Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship and a Churchill Fellow. He is passionate about drawing and has published two books; 'Drawing Italy' and 'Drawing Paris'. He is currently a Chapter Councillor on the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects and is a New South Wales Board of Architects Registration Examiner.

David has participated as a speaker in the Sydney Architecture Festival – however, this is his first year as a Festival Champion and we are very pleased to have him on the team.

 
Liane-Rossler Liane Rossler is a central figure within Australia's arts and design sector. A passionate spokesperson and ambassador for key issues related to the creative industries and the environment, Liane is involved a numerous collaborations, exhibitions and projects including Supercyclers, a design project with Sarah King focused on clever and beautiful reuse of waste shown at the recent Milan Design Week, and Happy Talk, an initiative with Heidi Dokulil launching in September 2011.

Liane is also well known as a co-founder and former designer and director for 25 years of Dinosaur Designs - one of Australia's most recognised design brands.

This is Liane's first year as a Festival Champion and the first time the Festival – we are very pleased to welcome her to the team.

 
Hannah-Tribe Tribe Studio Architects was created in 2003 by Founding Principal, Hannah Tribe.

Hannah studied architecture at Sydney University and Cornell University, graduating with First Class Honours and the University Medal, the RAIA NSW Chapter Prize and prizes for design, history, theory and construction.

Before starting Tribe Studio, Hannah worked for award-winning architects in Sydney and New York where she was involved in art museum design, urban design and high-end houses and apartments.

Hannah has taught at the University of Sydney, UTS and UNSW. She has tutored in design and lectured in design and design communications.

She also lectures on Tribe's work to her peers at the Institute of Architects and has participated in the national architecture conference as a moderator and presenter in 2008 and 2010. She is a member of NAWIC and sits on the NSW Chapter Council of the Australian Institute of Architects.

This is Hannah's first year as a Festival Champion – we are delighted that she has joined the team.

 
Kate St. James Kate St. James is an interior designer and the managing editor of Universal Magazines' Home Design + Living Series. Along with qualifications in interior design, Kate also studied journalism. Her specialty is architecture and design.

Kate worked as a journalist in London in the early 1970s, followed by a 20-year career in interior design including running her own interior design, architectural design and construction company specializing in top end residential and commercial projects.

During her design career Kate wrote for many design publications as well as teaching at Queensland College of Art and KVB College of Art and Design. She has also held positions as Queensland Chapter Convenor and National Executive member of the Society of Interior Designers of Australia and is currently a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia.

In 2007 Kate received a 20 year citation from the Design Institute of Australia for services to the design industry, in 2008 she was selected as part of the prestigious publication, Who's Who of Australian Women "Leadership and Beyond" a publication marking the lives of women who have made a significant contribution to Australian life, whether at a community, state, national or international level.

Kate is currently President of the Australian Architecture Association, an organization of which she has been a member since its inception and a volunteer tour guide since 2009, and sits on the NSW Architects Registration Board representing public interest and consumer views.

Her vision has always been to promote an awareness of Australian and international architecture and design – with a heavy dose of sustainability - to demonstrate to the wider community the meaningful way it can impact on our lives.

This is Kate's first year as a Festival Champion and the first time the Festival – we are very pleased to welcome her to the team.

 
Tone-Wheeler Tone Wheeler is an architect, author, educator and consultant with an abiding interest in environmental architecture and sustainable design. Tone founded the architectural practice Environa Studio 25 years ago and has designed individual and multiple housing projects, commercial buildings and urban design schemes, all with a strong emphasis on social and environmental concerns. He has won numerous awards and competitions, is a member and former chair of the AIA National Sustainability Committee, is a frequent speaker at architectural conferences and seminars, has been on faculty of 3 universities, has been a judge on "the New Inventors" program on ABC Television, and is one of the 'Homies' (formerly 'Woodies') on ABC702 on Saturday mornings and is on the NSW Building Professionals Board and the Board of ABSA (Association of Building Sustainability Assessors

Tone is a true Festival Champion having been involved since its inception in 2007. He has given talks, lectures and most importantly taken on the role of Festival Town Crier at Customs House in his original Festival jackets and hats. We are delighted to have his support and advice for this year's Festival.
